Marseilles shipping giant CMA CGM has posted a net profit of US$361 million last year after suffering a net loss of $30 million in 2011 - since corrected by 2012 revenues of $15.9 billion, up seven per cent, according to the Shipping Gazette.
The leading French container shipping company, the third largest in the world, said it lifted 10.6 million TEU during the year, six per cent more than in 2011.
Said CMA CGM executive officer Rodolphe Saade: "2012 was an important year for CMA CGM. As announced, we completed our financial restructuring and strengthened our balance sheet with the sale of a new equity interest to FSI and an additional stake to Yildirim. We have therefore begun 2013 on solid foundations from which to pursue growth."
Long troubled by heavy debt, CMA CGM said it has implemented its "action plan," which has generated $800 million savings, well ahead of the initial target, said the company statement.
The company's EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) soared 82 per cent year on year to $1.32 million, and produced an operating profit increase of 6.3 per cent.
Looking at the new year, the company statement said: "In early 2013, freight rates levels are higher than in early 2012. World demand is expected to vary by region, remaining weak inbound to Europe but showing more positive trends elsewhere, especially in the United States, Russia and emerging markets, particularly in Asia, Africa and Latin America."
CMA CGM said it also strengthened its balance sheet with the sale of a 49 per cent stake in Terminal Link for EUR400 million (US$514 million), closing on an $100 million equity injection from Turkey's Yildirim Group, receiving a $150 million equity injection from the French government's Fonds Strategique d'Investissement (FSI), and closing on an agreement with its banks regarding its debt restructuring.
Sinotrans profit up 1pc to US$104.3 million as revenues rise 8.5pc
DIVERSIFIED Chinese logistics giant Sinotrans has posted a one per cent increase in net profit to CNY649 million (US$104.3 million) drawn on revenues of CNY47.4 billion, up 8.5 per cent.
Forwarding revenue in Hong Kong-listed company's 10th year of operation increased 8.7 per cent to CNY39.8 million in 2012, compared to CNY36.6 million in 2011. Volume of sea freight forwarding containers was 8.2 million TEU in 2012, up 3.2 per cent on the previous year.
Revenue from marine transportation of the group in 2012 amounted to CNY4.91 billion, down 3.2 per cent in 2011. The number of containers shipped by the group rose to 2.8 million TEU up 9.8 per cent from 2011.
Air freight tonnage conveyed by company forwarding services stood at 417.2 million tonnes in 2012, increasing five per cent year on year.
"The increase in revenue from forwarding services in 2012 was higher than the increase in business volume, mainly attributable to the increase in the freight rates of container shipping market and rapid growth of specialised logistics business," said a company statement accompanying the results.
"In 2012, the group proactively acted upon the adversity of external market environment, maintained steady growth of operations and ensured the completion of full-year budget," the statement said.

Hong Kong's Orient Overseas (International) Limited (OOIL), parent of Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), posted a 2012 net profit increase of 63.3 per cent year on year to US$296.4 million drawn on revenues of $6.45 billion, up 7.4 per cent, according to the Shipping Gazette.
OOCL liftings increase 3.7 per cent to 5.2 million TEU with revenue per TEU rising 2.9 per cent year on year to $1,131 as operating capacity rose 8.8 per cent to 452,246 TEU, the company said.
"While 2012 was a profitable year for the group, the container transportation market continued to be challenging as the industry struggled to absorb substantial new-build vessel capacity while facing ongoing weak demand growth," said OOIL chairman CC Tung.
"Freight rates were low at the start of the year but did recover over the first half and into the second half of 2012. During that period the industry was able to absorb the new capacity being delivered, but by the fourth quarter, the further deterioration in the Eurozone economies and the muted growth in the United States saw a deterioration in both freight rates and load factors as excess capacity chased inadequate demand, resulting in a disappointing end to the year," he said.
Global trade demand growth slowed in the second half, mainly due to depressed imports to North Europe and the Mediterranean which affected the Asia-Europe and transatlantic trades, said the company statement.
"After a strong first half performance and a pleasing third-quarter, OOCL's operating profitability was impacted by the downwards pressure on freight rates during the last quarter of the year. Competitive pressure was most intense on the Asia-Europe trade as carriers sought to maintain volumes despite a reduction in trade levels," said Mr Tung.
"There was some partial offset to this pressure with bunker fuel prices coming down from the very high levels experienced in the first half of the year and remaining stable through and past the year end," Mr. Tung remarked.
OOCL continued to operate the Long Beach Container Terminal in California and the Kaohsiung Container Terminal in Taiwan, with a total throughput of two million TEU in 2012. OOCL also have a 20 per cent interest and management participation in the Tianjin Port Alliance International Container Terminal Co and the Ningbo Yuandong Terminal Ltd with a combined throughput of 4.1 million TEU.
"The year ahead looks as though it will be as difficult as 2012. While economic conditions in the United States are improving, the pace of economic recovery remains slow. Prolonged deflation in Europe has caused a decline in imports from Asia, and with Eurozone economies continuing to struggle, there is a possibility of further contraction," Mr. Tung said.

Singapore's Neptune Orient Lines (NOL), the parent of the world's seventh largest ocean liner, APL, suffered a net loss of US$419 million but made a three per cent revenue gain to $9.5 billion due to the $1.6 billion in sales from APL Logistics.
The company said in a statement the full-year net loss was due to a loss of $255 million in the first quarter and the one-time charges of $108 million.
"General market conditions in 2012 remained challenging. But thanks to our focus on increasing efficiencies throughout the group, we are in a better competitive position than before," said NOL chief executive Ng Yat Chung.
"We have im****** our cost base, renewed our fleet and expanded our logistics business. We are starting 2013 on a stronger footing than a year before," Mr Ng said.
APL, NOL's container shipping arm, narrowed its Core EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) loss in 2012 to $279 million, compared to $446 million Core EBIT loss in 2011, drawn on a two per cent increase in revenue to $8.1 billion with an average revenue at $2,509 per FEU.
APL shipped 3.02 million FEU in 2012, up one per cent year on year. The carrier reduced its fleet capacity by eight per cent and total fuel consumed by 10 per cent during the year, said the company statement. Headhaul vessel utilisation was above 90 per cent in 2012.
Said APL president Kenneth Glenn: "APL's im****** competitiveness has contributed to a better fourth quarter performance despite it being a traditionally weak season.
"We have continuously reduced our costs per FEU and will continue to focus on optimising yield while delivering a high level of service to our customers."
Looking ahead, NOL said severe overcapacity remains a problem for the container shipping industry, resulting in "considerable container freight rate uncertainty."
But the company said it possesses a better cost base due to "a modern fleet and more efficient processes", so NOL anticipates a turnaround in 2013, the Shipping Gazette informs.
